An introduction to Showing

The Kennel Club is the governing body for showing in the UK. There are a range of different types of show, so anyone who wants a go should be able to to find one that suits them. If you are keen to show, contact your local canine society and take your dog to Ringcraft classes, where both of you can learn how to make the best possible impression in the ring. Most classes assess the quality of the dog compared to the Breed Standard, but there are also handling classes, particularly those held for child handlers, where the standard of showing the dog is judged instead.
The Companion show (formerly Exemption Show) is normally held in aid of charity, and dogs do not need to be KC registered in order to enter. Entries are taken on the day, and prize money is generous! They are good fun for all the family, and frequently include novelty classes too.

The Open Show is a bit higher up the scale. Canine Societies organise these, inviting judges to assess KC registered dogs according to the Breed Standard, a blueprint for the breed that is approved by the Kennel Club. As well as assessing conformation they must ensure that dogs are fit and healthy and not suffering from any exaggerations that may affect their health and welfare. Some Open shows are 'general', that is scheduling classes for breeds from all 7 Groups, and others are for individual groups such Gundogs, or just for a specific breed. Details of shows are published in Dog World and Our Dogs, and entry forms must be received by the closing date. Rules and regulations start to mount up at this level, but Secretaries are always willing to advise if asked.

Championship Shows. This is when it gets a bit serious! It is advisable to get a bit of practice at Open shows before entering at a Championship show, as entries cost a lot more (about £25 for a General Championship show, often less for Breed Club shows). However, there is no doubt that a lot can be learned by watching the very best examples of your chosen breed - theoretically the best in Europe or even beyond as an increasing number of foreign dogs are visiting from abroad. In most breeds, the best dog and best bitch in each breed are awarded a Challenge Certificate, and on gaining their 3rd CC are awarded the title of Show Champion (or Champion in the case of breeds other than Gundogs), a title which guarantees a place in the history of the breed. In order to become a full Champion, a gundog has to prove its worth in the field by gaining a Show Gundog Working Certificate, or by gaining an award at a Field Trial. Certain placings will also qualify a dog for Crufts, the most prestigious dog show in the world
Crufts  Every novice exhibitor dreams of qualifying their dog for this event, held at the NEC in March each year. In the region of 25,000 dogs compete in a range of disciplines, and as at other Championship shows competition to win the CC's is strong.
